Brakes played out their first goalless draw of the season and their first in a little over 12 months as once again they could not be separated with Chester.

Three of the four meetings between these two sides have finished with honours even and this always looked likely to be the case here, as although both sides produced glimpses of their best form at times neither seemed to possess the guile or creativity to break down well organised defences at both ends of the pitch.

Paul Holleran named the same starting eleven that had edged past Kingstonian in the FA Trophy on Tuesday evening, and while his side kept a second successive clean sheet they were just unable to find that cutting edge to nick all three points at the other end of the pitch.

046 Edwards

The first half was an even affair with both sides doing their fair share of pressing but largely cancelling each other out. While Leamington looked lively in the opening ten minutes it was Chester who carved out the first chance of the afternoon when Danny Livesey’s header from Joel Taylor’s right wing centre had to be helped over the crossbar by Jake Weaver.

Four corners in quick succession brought no reward for the visitors, who at times were enjoying a little too much space to run into, but overall defences were coming out on top, with possession being surrendered by both sides with alarming regularity. Leamington came closest to goal from Kaiman Anderson’s dangerous corner, which had to be helped over the bar by Seals keeper Russ Griffiths.

The stalemate continued into the second half, Jack Edwards missing a good chance to potentially open the scoring when Callum Maycock set up Connor Taylor for a low cross into the six yard box that the Leamington skipper was inches from turning home.

Gradually the visitors began to assert their authority, Taylor sending two efforts wide before Anthony Dudley’s quick turn and shot produced a fine save from Weaver, who held onto the ball superbly.

Edwards had the ball in the net from Taylor’s left wing cross only for the goal to be ruled out for offside, while David Bremang’s fierce drive produced a good stop from Griffiths with his legs. Livesey then headed over the bar from a Gary Roberts free kick.

074 Bremang

Inside the final five minutes Junior English sent a half volley whistling just wide of the upright with the aid of a deflection, but perhaps the best chance of afternoon for Leamington came deep into injury time when Bremang beat the last defender to head into the path of Anderson, who advanced into the box on the right before blazing his shot over the bar.

Right on the final whistle Joel Taylor was forced to head over his own crossbar, but it finished honours even.

Managers’ Reaction

‘For us to get two or three games played on our pitch this week when others have seen theirs called off, the people responsible here have done really well. The conditions today weren’t great, the wind was blowing around a bit. You could see it was going to be a percentage game, it was a physical battle, and they (Chester) are good at that. Bernard and Johnno (Chester managers) - their whole careers have been built on their identity - they like good, hard working honest players and I always think we’re pretty similar, and we had to go and match them today. On the whole it was probably about right, we might have edged the chances, they had a couple as well but on the back of a really difficult week for us with the journey to London and the disappointment with losing the late goal, then a good performance on Tuesday. Obviously we’ve lost Joe Clarke in the first half too. It was a really disciplined performance against one of the better sides in the league. The game did lack a bit of quality but sometimes at this level of football you look at other qualities, and every player out there has left everything on the pitch with their commitment levels. It was played in a good spirit, they’re a good bunch. It’s a good point, and to keep a clean sheet against a side which with the quality they have and the delivery from set plays and the targets they’ve got, I’d probably take more out of the 0-0 than the 3-3 earlier this season. As a spectacle I think it was good for the amount of effort and everything the players put in. It was a good good point for us.’
