Worcester City 2 Leamington
Lions 2
Report submitted by Russell Davis
9 March 2008, Worcester.
Lions made the long journey to Worcester in good spirits and started the game brightly and in a positive manner, something that was missing last week. Every player was encouraging each other and supporting each other. The pitch was like concrete and made a passing game difficult. But we continued to try and play football.
Sophie Meade returned to the line up along Charlotte up front. Soon the partnership seemed to be working, a neat flick on from Sophie found Charlotte who shot just wide. The back four looked solid as ever with the return of Charlie B. Lions soon found the back of the net after great build up play involving Stacey and Sophie. Sophie released a perfect ball into the path of Carly Nevin, who slotted home coolly passed the advancing keeper. Sharon was having a good game at left back. Kate Bradshaw was pushed into left midfield and looked comfortable. Kate soon scored with a looping cross that found its way into the back of the net. The Lions should have used this as a platform to push on. But, we started to rush our game and make mistakes. In a mad five minutes Worcester scored twice to make it 2-2 just before half time.
In the second half the Lions were encouraged to try and play football and more importantly to keep the ball. Sophie came off with a thigh problem. Sam returned upfront and soon had the Worcester defence on the back foot with some good work. Worcester desperate for all 3 points resorted to playing the long ball over the top. Lions coped with this and continued to press themselves as they also felt they could come away with all the points.
Sis and Stacey constantly pulled the Worcester midfield apart and released the Lions front runners. Katy came on and made an immediate impact, forcing the Worcester defence to rush things. 2 – 2 and the final whistle.
Russell Davis the Lions Manager said "The Lions can take a lot of credit from this positive performance. Yes, we made mistakes, but we will learn from them. We looked solid in all departments and work hard for each other off the ball. We need to remember we are still a young team and have come along way in such a short space of time and we have now gone over 12 games unbeaten in the league a record for the club".
The Lions are still hoping to field a development team next season. Please check out the Lions web @ www.leamingtonlions.com
