British Gas Business Football League

British Gas Business

Leamington FC as an FA Charter Club

Leamington Lions 5 Rugby Town 0

Report submitted by Russell Davis

23 September 2007, New Windmill Ground.

Leamington Lions started their league campaign at their new home in fine style.

Lions were immediately in control and created a number of chances and took the lead on 18 minutes when Sophie Meade scored after a great run and shot.

Lions continued to put the pressure on Rugby. Sharon Williams, Player of the Match, was having an influential game at left back and with Lions having over eight corners in the first half her delivery was causing them problems. Sam Morris with her pace was denied by their goalkeeper on a couple of occasions

Lions went in disappointed only to be one goal up at half time but after 65 minutes extended their lead when Sharon Williams played a through ball to Sam Morris who finished clinically to score her first goal for the Lions since signing in the summer.

After 69 minutes the Lions made a double substitution with Charlotte Davis and Laura Dunlop. Within five minutes the Lions took a three goal lead from Charlotte Davis who swivelled on the ball from a corner and blasted the ball into the top left hand corner of the net.

In the 82nd minute, Lions were really dominating and playing good football. A crisp move then led to a through ball from Laura Dunlop to Sam Morris who then coolly finished from the edge of the box.

In the final minute, Kate Bradshaw, who was introduced with 20 minutes to go, went on a fine run and rounded the keeper but was brought down in the area. Kate coolly stepped up and scored from the spot.

Russell Davis the Lions Manager said  "This was a great win and will kick start our season, giving the team the confidence to really progress this season "

The Lions travel to Studley next Sunday 30th September, kick off  at 2pm

Lions previous match, v Coventry City Ladies.
