Lions savage woeful Rugby
Leamington Lions Ladies continued their good run of form by
thrashing Rugby Ladies away by nine goals to nil.
This was a good all round performance. Lions took the lead
as early as 7 minutes, when Sam Morris volleyed
in Angela Wiffen’s
free kick. Sam had "scored" seconds earlier, only to
see the linesman to raise his flag.
After 12 minutes Lions went two up when a fine run and
cross from Sam Morris was finished off by Katy
Sheffield.
25 minutes Kate Bradshaw made it three with
a fine shot from outside the area. The goalkeeper had
no chance as the ball flew into the top corner. The Lions
had totally dominated the game from the start and Rugby really
had no answer.
Stacey Doughty, player of the match, was having a fine game
in midfield and after a fine run set up Sam
Morris, who finished
clinically to make it 4-0. Stacey had taken total control
of the middle of the park, covering every blade of
grass on the pitch and winning every ball in midfield.
After 42 minutes, Sophie Meade made it five
after a good run by Sharon Williams.
Just before half time Sam Morris made it 6-0
and got her hat trick. Sam had the Rugby back
four chasing shadows for most of the afternoon.
Just after half time good pressure was applied by Sophie Meade,
who laid it on to Sam Morris to score her
fourth.
A number of substitutions were made after 60 minutes and the
Lions made it eight when Sophie Meade was
played in by Stacey Doughty and put the ball into the corner
of the net.
Sophie Meade then got her hat trick after
80 minutes. Stacey Doughty's shot was saved by Rugby’s
keeper and Sophie Meade volleyed it in to make it 9 0. Stacey
was pushed up front and had plenty of chances only to the see
the majority go over the bar. Credit to the Rugby keeper,
for pulling off a number of good saves. This should have
been double figures, but the Lions will learn from today as
chances won’t
come as easy again. Rugby will struggle to stay in this
league.
The lion’s manager Russell Davis said “This was
a great result and makes it two wins in a row on our travels.
We need to build on this when we face Studley at the NWG on
6th January. So come on down the New Windmill and cheer
the Lions on, kick off 2:00pm".
