Redditch United Ladies 0 Leamington Lions 5
Report submitted by Russell Davis
29 April 2008, Redditch.
Leamington Lions travelled the short distance to Redditch for their final league game of the season, facing a side they had beaten 6-1 onlt two days previously. Conditions weren't for the faint hearted.
Lions started brightly and were determined to keep one final clean sheet. On 7 minutes Lions were rewarded a free kick just outside the 18 yard box. Captain Angie Wiffen stepped up to curl the ball over the stranded keeper, 1-0. Minutes later Lions made it 2-0 with a good header from leading scorer Sam Morris. Lions were in total control and stretched the Redditch team in every department. Sam soon made it 3-0 with a good run carving open the Redditch back four and an equally good lob over the keeper. Lions were enjoying their football as the rain continued to hammer down. More good work from midfield released Sam to slot the ball home neatly and make it 4-0. Carly who was pushed up front along side Sam was having a fine game and linked up really well. Sam was outstanding tonight and chased every ball down forcing Redditch in to making mistakes. She got her 4th and Lions 5th after good work and flicked the ball just inside the outstretched keeper. Half time 5-0!
Second half and the Lions introduced all three substitutes. Kate Bye made her second outing for the Ladies and will definitely be an asset next season. Vicky 'Safe hands' Busby was only called upon once and pulled off a great save to keep her clean sheet intact. The Redditch 'keeper pulled off some great saves in the second half and kept the lions at bay. Final score 5-0.
Russell Davis Manager said, "This has been an excellent season and the platform for us to push on next season. We cannot fear any team in this league and we now know what we have to do to bring the title back to Leamington next season. The players have gelled really well this year and hopefully a few new faces during the coming months will help us in our quest".
This season has not only been a good one for the Ladies, every Lions team has improved and finished well in their leagues. Our aim is to develop players and not worry about the results. The Club is still on the lookout for new volunteers who feel they can help improve the Lions. Check us out at www.leamingtonlions.com.
