Lions 11 Marston Green 0
Report submitted by Russell Davis
13 April 2008 , New Windmill Ground.
After weeks of lacking in the final third, today was definitely the turn around. Today we played as a team. We went forward and defended as a unit. From the start we went at Marston Green in search of the opening goal. Stacey nearly broke the deadlock after 4 minutes, only to see her shot hit the cross bar. Sophie returned up front and defended from the front. Sophie was soon off the mark after the keeper received a back pass, Sophie quickly forced the keeper to rush things and in making a mistake Sophie took the ball off her to slot into the empty net. Lions pushed on and were rewarded a free kick, Angie whipped a great ball in, Carly flicked it on for Sam who shot just over the bar. Sam soon found the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed as Sam was judged to be off side. Jenny then split the Marston Green defence open with a pin point pass to Sam who coolly slotted past the advancing keeper, (2-0).
Sophie was having a good game forcing the Marston rear guard to make mistakes in rushing their game. Carly was keeping the width and causing all sorts of problems every time she ran at the back four. Sophie soon came provider and set up Stacey with her first goal for the Lions, (3-0). Helen was getting forward more and released Linda who went on a great run and played a great ball into Sam who set up Sophie to drive the ball past the keeper in style, (4-0). Helen again whipped another great ball into the box for Sophie who flicked the ball into the path of Carly who smashed the ball home, (5-0). Sophie and Sam were causing the Marston back four plenty of problems and working hard to force Marston into mistakes.
Second half Lions started slowly, we lost our shape for a period as players tried to push on and score themselves. We soon got our shape back and started to use the width more. Linda who finished the first half on a high was soon running at Marston again and putting some good balls into the box. She again played a good ball into Sophie who set up Sam to make it 6-0. Sam now had her shooting boot on and hit a cracker from just outside the 18 yard box to make it 7-0.
Within minutes of the restart Sam smashed a great ball from 25 yards over the keeper to make it 8-0. Sam was now full of confidence and made a good run into the box, a last ditch tackle and the ball broke to Carly who placed the ball into the bottom corner 9-0. Sam again latched onto a loose ball and seeing the keeper outside her 6 yard box, lobbed the ball coolly over her to take her tally to 5 and the Lions to 10-0.
Charlotte Davis came on for Sophie and was soon in the thick of it causing the back four problems. Sam hit a thunder bolt of a shot, only to see it hit the post. Charlotte was first to react and slot the ball home 11-0.
Russell Davis manager said “Credit to Marston Green they battled to the end and hit the woodwork twice, but today we played as a team and knew what we had to do and gave our selves some belief in front of goal. It was a great team performance. Sam was awarded player of the match, not just for her goals but believing in her self and not dropping her head when things didn’t go her way."
The Lions our now 13 games unbeaten in the league and this stretches over six months and the Lions entertain league leaders Hereford on Wednesday 16th at home, 8:00pm kick off.
