2 December 2007, Marston Green.
Leamington lions won a nine goal thriller against Marston
Green in the West Midlands Ladies League. After 3 weeks without
a game it was good to get back to winning ways.
The Lions started the game in fine fashion after 3 minutes
when Sophie Meade fine shot was parried by their keeper and
Laura Dunlop was on hand to strike the ball home
Sophie Meade and Sam Morris were working really well together
and were a constant threat. After 10 minutes it was another
fine run and cross from Sophie Meade that set up Sam Morris
who coolly finished from close range to make it 2-0
The Lions then went into a three goal lead when a surging
run by Katy Sheffield set up Sophie Meade who laid it back
to Player of the Match Sam Morris who hit a low crisp drive
into the corner of the net to make it 3-0.
The lions were in good control but then a disastrous 5 minutes
after 30 minutes saw lions go from 3-0 up to 3-3. The first
goal for Marston was a ball over the top and a good finish
from their striker. The Second was a controversial penalty
and third a scramble in the goalmouth with it difficult to
tell who got the last touch.
In the second half the lions began to gain back control but
then a goalkeeper error gave Marston the lead after 60 minutes
to make it 4-3 to marston
The lions were really going to have to fight and not drop
their heads. Charlotte Davis was moved up front and after 70
minutes from a ball down the line she flicked the ball over
the defenders head and with a great cross found Laura Dunlop
who finished in style to put lions back level 4-4
It was end to end stuff and lions with 10 minutes left took
the lead 5-4 when the ball came to Kirsty Lloyd 10 yards outside
the box and with a fine 30 yard screamer put the ball into
the top left hand corner of the net for the winner
The Lions Manager Russell Davis said “It was really
good to see the character in the team and players really fighting
for it right until the end. We need to eradicate those mistakes
for their goals as it could have been a lot easier but I would
have taken the three points before the game”
