Leamington
Lions 1 Knowle 0
Report submitted by Russell Davis
2 March 2008, Knowle.
Lions travelled the short distance to Knowle in confident mood but with only 12 players due to injury and something called Mother’s Day. Charlotte Davis, Katy Sheffield and new signing Linda Turner all took their places in the starting eleven. The pitch wasn’t the best we have played on by far. But, we have been spoilt at the New Windmill.
Lions started brightly, putting Knowle on the back foot. Some good link up play down the left from Sharon and Linda created a fine chance for Charlotte Davis who made it 1-0 when she slotted the ball coolly pass the Knowle keeper. This was probably the move of the match.
There was only going to be one team that took the points today, and it wasn’t Knowle. Leamington with a makeshift back four looked as solid as ever. Kate Bradshaw slotted into centre half and looked comfortable there. The shots rained in on the away keeper, but none of them really testing. The ref didn’t help the game at all blowing his whistle every time a Leamington player went in for a tackle: the game didn’t really get flowing with the ref intervening at every challenge.
The second half started in similar fashion, but soon got scrappy with Leamington dropping their normal high standards to Knowle’s. A few negative vibes set in and our heads dropped.
In the second half Linda went close after a fine run and shot which was saved by the Knowle 'keeper.
Manager Russell Davis was happy with the three points today and said “We need to pick our game up for next weeks visit to Worcester. We are a good passing team and we didn’t do that today. It was good to see Charlotte and Katy in the starting eleven. They have been working really hard in training. Also it was really pleasing to see Linda in her first senior game".
Player of the match went to Linda who battled bravely for the ball and continued to be positive.
