Fairfield Villa 0 Leamington Lions 3

Report submitted by Russell Davis

3 February 2008.

Leamington Lions travelled to Fairfield Villa unbeaten since October. Today was about turning our possession into goals.  That we did, with three great goals as well.

The game as ever was open and end to end.  The Lions worked the width as much as possible on every attack.  Lions broke the deadlock with an early ball from Shorty down the left to realise Sam who slotted home coolly as ever.  With our strikers defending well up the pitch, Fairfield were reduced to trying to play long ball to their lone striker. Lions continued to press forward, but lacked the final product.  Vicky as usual was reliable when ever called on.  Fairfield should have equalised late on in the first half, only for the striker to lash the ball high and wide.  A simple tap in would have been adequate.  This was a let off and the Lions knew it.

Second half started in similar fashion, both teams well up for the game.  Vicky produced two outstanding saves to keep us in the game.  Lions brought on new signing Carly Nevin who was soon on the score sheet.  Good build up play from Sis and Sam realised Carly on the edge of the six yard box to make it 2 – 0.  Shorty should have made it three, but fired just over the bar.

After a great ball down the line by Kirsty Lloyd, Sam Morris went on surging run and then put in a great cross that Lions substitute Charlotte Davis finished with a well taken strike from just inside the box.

The game finished 3 – 0 to the Lions and convincing winners on the day.  Russell Davis, team manager, said “Today shows how far we have come this season against a good side.  All players were a credit to the Club. “ Player of the match went to Vicky ‘safe hands’ Busby, who when called upon was as reliable as ever.
